Alexander Wilson (1766-1813) was a Scottish-born American weaver, peddler, poet, ornithologist, naturalist and illustrator.
Vast strolls through the American countryside, usually alone, and his extreme dedication to his ornithological studies, were characteristic of Wilson; it was in this way that he collected most of the information for his nine volumes of the American Ornithology (1808-1814). He died during the writing of the ninth volume.
Wilson is now regarded as the Father of American Ornithology, the greatest American ornithologist prior to Audubon.
